If an NGO is not a business, then what exactly is it?
So let’s understand what the definition of NGO is from investopedia, “a nongovernmental organization is a nonprofit, citizen-based group that functions independently of the government.” A Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), according to www.ngo.org, “is any non-profit, voluntary citizens’ group which is organized on a local, national or international level.”
Now we can see what an NGO is all about. This means that an NGO is not a profit making Organisations in a measure. Wnenver profits becomes Paramount, then it’s no longer an NGO but an interest group or co-operative. 2. Operational NGOs. We don’t have much of this type in Nigeria. This kind of NGOs has to do with NGOs that focus primarily on development projects. These NGOs are giant ones and anyone can’t just start it up because it needs proper funding. An example of this type of NGO are those that provide pipe-borne water to a community or those who provids and equips a training.or health facilitates for the less privileged.

Statistics from the World Bank has it shown that most NGOs end up under both categories. The reason is that, at some point, an advocacy NGO will have to run development projects in a bid to achieve their goals while an operational will also have to run an Advocacy NGO to achieve its targeted goals. So an advocacy NGO can switch into becoming an operational NGO for the time being. While a developmental NGO can switch into an Advocacy NGO for the time being.
